There are a number of different sources of data that the City could access in order to better inform its ongoing business retention, expansion, and recruitment efforts. Several sources and some potential uses are described in Appendix B. Roles and Responsibilities. Economic Development staff will be primarily responsible for identifying. obtaining, and reviewing secondary data sources that will support local economic development efforts. Depending on the depth and complexity of the data to be reviewed. the City may wish to contract with a consultant to perform data manipulation and analysis. Regarding local business license data. City Finance Department staff should be responsible for producing reports from the business license data. and forwardins the information to City Economic Development staff. Economic Development staff should review the data and identify firms which should be targeted for outreach. Priority: MEDIUM. Acquisition and review of various secondary data sources should occur on an on -going or as -needed basis, as deemed necessary by Economic Development staff. The review of City business license data should be conducted at least annually for each local business. The Finance Department should provide Economic Development staff business license reports on at least a quarterly basis, to ensure that Economic Development staff can make timely outreach to identified businesses. Costs and Sources of Funding. The primary costs for this program will be for data review and analysis, rather than data acquisition. These costs will be incurred in the form of in -kind staff time to revieA and analvze information or in the form of consultin= contracts that could be used to conduct specialized analvses.
