Mayor Corbett - Asked if the recommendation was to set aside funds for this project.
Wandzia responded that the City should not set money aside at this time, but staff does
want to keep the City Council aware of the issue. Mike Oliver added that the
recommendation is to hold off and see what happens. We are waiting for D.T.S.E.
Mayor Corbett - Asked what the status of the Brownfield's Application was. Wandzia
responded that the City was not selected for round two of the Brownfield Application, but
may be given consideration in the third round.
Shop San Leandro Program
John Jermanis - Stated there was a company that wanted to sell "Shop San Leandro"
cards that would give discounts to card holders. John stated we should hold off on this
concept until the new Economic Development Coordinator is hired.
Mayor Corbett - Suggested the City provide financial assistance to the downtown are and
other merchants to assist them in putting together certain programs or projects. The
Mayor suggested, instead of calling it the "Shop San Leandro Program" maybe we' could
use the funds to support Main Street programs and other projects of this nature.
John Jermanis - Suggested the new Economic Development Coordinator could work with
the downtown merchants and the Chamber of Commerce to develop a concept that would
encourage the community to embrace this type of project.
Wandzia Grycz-Hernandez - Stated she appreciated these comments and suggestions and
that she and Nanci Klein had been discussing the Economic Development Budget in
preparation for the budget process. They are looking for ideas that may foster and
encourage ways to support this type of merchant/group activity.
Garry Loeffler - Basically, we are talking about a marketing strategy that promotes
business in the community. Bayfair has a marketing strategy; we as a City need to have a
marketing strategy for our business community. We need to sit down with the business
community and establish a partnership to create the process. The Economic Development
Committee will need ammunition and resources to achieve this goal. This is a task for
them to explore; and, possibly, this is the vehicle for us to allocate resources when we
decide what "X" is.
Mayor Corbett - The Downtown Business Association (DBA) has been started again and
the City is working with them. This is a wonderful model to share with other merchant
communities throughout the San Leandro area. More merchants are moving into the
Bancroft/Dutton corridor, and it would be nice to see a merchants' association in that
area.
John Jermanis - Stated that the ice skating rink would have been one way the City could
have assisted the Downtown Business Association in "Shopping San Leandro."
M
c3
