a W
have identified ideas to bring back to the City Council to reduce the costs so that there is
not an increase in fees.
II. Public Comments
Lee Ness - Is concerned the Cable TV rate will go up. At the present time he is paying
in excess of $3.00 per month on his cable bill and he feels if the tax is in lieu of an
increase it will increase his cable bill.
Ken Ponn - Spoke on several issues regarding the budget. He stated the Downtown
Business Association would like to see the ice rink come back. He said he had not heard
any negative comments regarding the ice rink. He said people tend not to say anything if
they like a project but are vocal if they are opposed to it. Mr. Ponn said the cost did
concern many of the downtown business owners. He also stated that, as a member of the
downtown association, he would like to try to raise revenue by selling advertising space
to members of the DBA to off -set the costs incurred by the ice rink.
The second issue Mr. Ponn mentioned was the hiring of the Economic Development
Coordinator. He said one of the most important benefits the business community
received from Susan McCue was her active involvement with the DBA. He stated that
Susan was knowledgeable about the downtown area, the funds that were available for use,
and she attended meetings and was a high-energy person with ideas. He referred to the "
Shop San Leandro" program and feels there is a need to think of a way for merchants to
do a promotion for different areas of the City. Mr. Ponn said there was a community
survey done in the downtown area last summer. He didn't know if the City Council had
talked about the suggestions from this survey, but there were some very good suggestions
made. Mr. Ponn asked if anything had come about from this survey.
Mayor Corbett - Stated the City Council had not had this as an agenda item in a work
session. She asked if he would like her to bring this up as an item.
Ken Ponn - The question is whether to bring it before the City Council or the Economic
Development Committee for discussion. He stated they were trying to get more dialogue
generated regarding economic issues. He stated a committee had been created to take a
look at some of these long-range issues.
46
R
