CITY OF SAN LEANDRO <br />CITY COUNCIL FINANCE COMMITTEE MEETING <br />FEBRUARY 20, 1996 <br />The City Council Finance Committee convened on February 20, 1996, at the San Leandro <br />Community Library in the Estudillo Room. <br />I. 1996-97 Budget Strategies (Oliver/Jermanis) <br />John Jermanis - Informed the Finance Committee that staff will return next week for a <br />review and recommended budget strategy report to the City Council. At that time staff <br />will have a draft of various responses that the Finance Committee has given on issues in <br />order to begin developing a report to present to the City Council. <br />II. Community Assistance Program (Bohne/Hillis) <br />Nancy Hillis reviewed the recommendations for Community Assistance, (See <br />Attachment 1.) Nancy said the requests for assistance far exceed the funds available. <br />However, Community Assistance is not asking for any additional funds. Nancy stated <br />there will be some very tough decisions to be made; and, ultimately, the City Council will <br />have to approve these recommendations. <br />Nancy stated the Project Literacy Program will remain the same, but it is recommended <br />that the funding source change. Nancy said staff is recommending that the Project <br />Literacy Program be viewed as an Economic Development issue. This would allow it to <br />be included as part of the CDBG goals for the 1996-97 fiscal year. <br />Julian Polvorosa - Would like to see a break down of the Project Literacy funding source, <br />especially since the source of funds is changing. <br />Four New Proposals This Year <br />Deaf Counseling and Referral Agency - Is requesting $25,000. This money will not be <br />used to fund new programs; it will be used for general operating expenses. <br />Legal Aid Society of Alameda County - Is requesting $40,000 to provide funding for <br />low-income residents who need legal assistance. <br />San Leandro Boys' and Girls' Club - Is requesting $10,000 - to be used for a target <br />outreach program for gang prevention. <br />Service Opportunities for Seniors - Is requesting $23,436 to provide meals -on -wheels. <br />FE <br />1 <br />
