2 EXISTING CONDITIONS <br /> San Leandro Crosstown Corridors Study 2-7 <br />for safer streets, and community engagement. They also helped co-create <br />engagement activities and materials and get out the word. <br />Each Student Ambassador came to the project with their own strengths and <br />skills. During Phase 1, student ambassadors began their work on June 21, 2021 <br />and supported the creation of content for the pop-up mobile workshops, <br />assisted in spreading the word about the online outreach resources, and had <br />the opportunity to co-lead stakeholder interviews with our team. Additionally, <br />Ambassadors created and managed social media accounts for the project, <br />creating videos and other ideas that the students brought to the project. <br />What We Heard <br />In general, respondents expressed enthusiasm for walking and biking along <br />both corridors, but with major concerns about comfort and safety. Just over <br />30% of respondents for both corridors indicated they do feel comfortable and <br />safe, with the remainder somewhat comfortable or not comfortable at all. <br />Respondents shared a variety of concerns, with some themes standing out. <br />Issues along Bancroft Avenue highlighted by stakeholders include: <br />• Unsafe speeds <br />• Drivers misusing the center turn lane as a passing lane <br />• Student safety concerns <br />• Bikeway connectivity <br />• Business access <br />• Bus stop quality and accessibility <br />Issues along Williams Street highlighted by stakeholders include: <br />• Goods movement and business access <br />• Safe access to Halkin Elementary and Muir Middle Schools <br />• Connections to San Leandro BART and the Bay Trail <br />• Rail crossing safety and accessibility <br /> <br /> Student Ambassadors conducted outreach and engaged with the communities along <br />Bancroft Avenue and Williams Street throughout summer 2021.
