Regardless of where they start, they all
come away with a deeper connection to the natural world and an intensified ethic of
stewardship. Impact on program participants as a result of SCA experiences have shown that
our members develop lifelong inter- and intra-personal skills, helping to build responsible
citizens. An SCA Strategic Priority is to develop a talented, mission-focused workforce built on
trust that is engaged and inspired by a clear shared. This project adds to the continuum of
opportunities we make available to young people to build a career pathway for a successful
future. Members will receive training and education (depending on age requirements and project
focus) in hand and power tool use, equipment maintenance, trail maintenance and construction,
CPR/First Aid, JEDI training, indigenous knowledge, climate resiliency, and more. Leader
training encompasses a similar breadth of training and also includes environmental education
basics, risk management, and youth development theory and practice. SCA will provide staff
time from a Program Director, a Program Manager, a Project Coordinator/Crew Leader, and 6
high school aged Crew Members to accomplish the project goals.
The Program Director, Kate Casale, will direct project activities, including partnerships with and
relationships with key staff at City of San Leandro and other project partners; manage budgets
and support invoicing procedures; and oversee staff implementing the program.
The Program Manager, Arnold Palomo, will provide technical assistance, training, and overall
supervision and management of urban forest crew members and zone operations; work closely
on implementation with the Project Coordinator and Director as needed.
The Project Coordinator/Crew Leader, Calvin Jackson, will lead the urban forest crew members
in reforestation, conservation and community outreach and education projects in the City of San
Leandro and surrounding areas; participate fully in conservation projects with the crews that
they supervise; and monitor projects and provide on-site training when necessary; provide
separate days of service to supplement watering needs in addition to days on site with the youth
crew.
The goal of the program is to create environmental stewards and future leaders who are
directed to pathways to careers workforce development certificated programs at local
community colleges, universities and labor unions through community engagement, physical
labor, and teamwork. The Crew Leader will manage individual crew members and group safety,
personal development, work life, environmental education, and planting projects.
