TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS <br />300 Shrubs and shrub beds; ground cover plantings <br />301 Pruning - Thinning, shaping, removing dead material <br />(a)Shrubs shall be pruned as necessary throughout the year to encourage healthy, natural <br />growth patterns for each specific variety and to maintain healthy appearance, maintain <br />intended design, function and appearance. Pruning shall include thinning, shaping, and <br />removing dead or diseased branches. <br />i.Technique of ‘feathering’ back shall be used to allow for a more natural <br />appearance. <br />ii.Removal of dead, broken or diseased branches <br />(b)Landscape shrubs shall be trimmed and contained in their intended spaces and shall be <br />pruned to maintain a natural looking appearance and not be sheared, balled or boxed. <br />(c)For flowering shrubs, including roses, dead blossoms still attached shall be removed. <br />Shrubs which may restrict visibility, such as those adjacent to left hand turn lanes or <br />those within 100 feet of any intersection shall be kept within the height range of 12-24 <br />inches as measured from the street level. <br />(d)Different species and types of shrubs should not be allowed to grow together, and <br />Contractor should consult with the City regarding selective removal of mature plants in <br />order to let remaining plants grow. Suckers/volunteer intruders shall not be allowed to <br />grow within the established shrubs. <br />(e)Existing ivy growth in shrubs shall be removed and shall be kept trimmed back from <br />shrubs/trees. <br />(f)Ground cover plantings shall be trimmed as necessary to maintain an area free of plant <br />growth surrounding trees, shrubs. Trimmed to maintain a seperation between different <br />species and shall not be allowed to grow together or become entwined. Ground cover <br />plantings with a trailing growth habit shall be edged and kept within the planting areas or <br />inside the sidewalk and curb. <br />(g)All shrubs shall be pruned back to clear all roadways, buildings, curbs, gutters, and <br />sidewalks. Shrubs shall not block signs, utilities, utility meters or any other facilities <br />located within the work areas. Ground cover shall not be permitted to grow onto <br />sidewalks, walkways, turf areas or curbs. <br />(h)The City requires “Bay Friendly” hand pruning/thinning to thin shrubs, reduce the <br />frequency of pruning and reduce the use of power tools at the San Leandro Senior Center <br />location.
