CITY OF SAN LEANDRO <br />STAFF REPORT <br />DATE: July 7, 2008 <br />TO: John Jermanis, City Manager <br />FROM: Marian Handa, City Clerk~~.~' <br />SUBJECT PROJECT/PROJECT DESCRIPTION: <br />APPROVED AND <br />FORWARDED <br />TO CITY COUNCIL <br />Jo ermanis <br />Ci ~ anager <br />RESOLUTION CALLING A SPECIAL MUNICIPAL RUNOFF ELECTION FOR THE <br />ELECTION OF CITY COUNCILMEMBER, DISTRICT 2; PROVIDING NOTICE OF <br />ELECTION ON THE 4'~' DAY OF NOVEMBER, 2008, AND DIRECTING THAT SAID <br />NOTICE BE GIVEN; AND REQUESTING THAT THE ALAMEDA COUNTY BOARD OF <br />SUPERVTSORS PERMIT THE CONSOLIDATION OF SAID MUNICIPAL ELECTION WITH <br />THE STATEWIDE GENERAL ELECTION TO BE HELD ON NOVEMBER 4, 2008 AND <br />DIRECT THE ALAMEDA COUNTY REGISTRAR OF VOTERS TO PROVIDE ALL <br />NECESSARY SERVICES RELATED TO SAID ELECTION <br />SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION <br />Section 225(b) of the Charter of the City of San Leandro requires a successful candidate for <br />elective office to receive at least 50% plus one of the votes cast for that office. In the event that <br />no candidate receives 50% plus one of the votes cast for that office, the Charter requires the City <br />Council to provide for a runoff vote to determine the person elected. It is anticipated that the <br />results from the June 3, 2008 General Municipal Election will be certified by the Council on July <br />7, 2008. No candidate for the City Council District 2 seat received the required 50% plus one <br />votes cast for that office. <br />It is recommended that the Council adopt a resolution calling and giving notice of the holding of <br />a Special Municipal Runoff Election to determine the persons elected to the District 2 City <br />Council seat. <br />BACKGROUND <br />On Tuesday, June 3, 2008, the City of San Leandro held its General Municipal Election for the <br />election of City Councilmembers for Districts 2, 4 and 6. The election was consolidated with the <br />Statewide Primary Election and conducted on the City's behalf by the Alameda County Registrar <br />of Voters (ROV). It is anticipated that on July 7, 2008, the City Council will adopt the resolution <br />declaring the results of the June 3, 2008 General Municipal Election. <br />The results of the June 3, 2008 General Municipal Election indicate that no candidate for the <br />office of City Councilmember, District 2 received the required 50% plus one of the votes for that <br />
